About

Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) is part of the world’s largest volunteers supported mentoring network.  BBBS provides long-term, one-to-one mentoring to help change the course of vulnerable young people’s lives. Youth mentoring can and is the answer for many young people and it is within our power as a community to create change for young people!

History

Big Brothers Big Sisters has been operating across the globe for more than a century starting in 1904 in the United States of America.  To-date, Big Brothers Big Sisters Australia has been operating for 40 years and continues to support young people in need of a positive adult role model in their lives.

BBBS currently operates in 14 countries across the globe helping over 280,000 children around the world reach their potential through professionally supported one-to-one relationships.  While young people may face many different challenges, the positive impact of a Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring relationship has been demonstrated across cultures.   International research has proven that mentoring changes lives and that every $1 invested into a Big Brothers Big Sisters programme has an $18 social return on investment (SROI).

Their Vision

For vulnerable young people in Australia to have the opportunity to unlock their potential, creating a brighter future for themselves and their community.

Their Purpose

To provide vulnerable young people with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships, that change lives for the better, two people at a time.  BBBS believes in the potential of all young people, supported mentoring programs help build resilience, self-confidence and self-belief.

Their Programs

BBBS has four core mentoring models offered in Australia:

Community Based Mentoring – currently operating in Ballarat provides young people with a sense of belonging and purpose;

In School Mentoring – offered in Melbourne to young people who require additional support;

Online E-Mentoring “Our Space Platform” – this platform is unique in that matches can catch up on a secure and supervised platform.  It has created a lot of interest during the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic!  We have moved a lot of our matches to the platform so they can continue to catchup during isolation; and

The Young Achievers Program (YAP) – young people are matched with a mentor working in their field of interest.
